"Extinct" Rodent Discovered on Nevis? Local Nevis biologist and nature guide, Jim Johnson has scored what could be a major coup for the Nevis Biodiversity Project in that he may well have (re)discovered a species of rodent long thought extinct within the Caribbean! If confirmed this could be a major event for Nevis as a whole, as new species of rodents are not discovered everyday.
It would also mark the only known
species of mammal native to Nevis, besides several species of bats.
If the presence of the Megalomys rodent
and the extremely rare
Nevis Bullfinch, can be scientifically documented,
then it should provide the Nevis Island Administration a significant boost in their
efforts to have the Nevis Peak area declared a 'National Park' and thus off
limits to developers.
Stay tuned for further developments as
they happen....
