Bees & Wasps of
Nevis
| "Exactly one social wasp is
native to both Nevis and St Kitts. It is Polistes crinitus,
which is found in the Greater Antilles and the northern half of the
Lesser Antilles. It is reasonably abundant in St. Kitts, as is
Polistes dominicus, which was probably deliberately introduced in
the early 20th century as a (probably not very effective) control agent
for sugar-cane pests. The peculiar thing is that Polistes crinitus
seems to be almost vanishingly rare in Nevis, and one can go for days
and days in the countryside without seeing even one individual. This is
rather mysterious, as the conditions that make St Kitts a hospitable
place for it would seem also to be found in Nevis." -
